As of 2019, the total forest cover in India is 712,249 Sq. km (71.22 million hectares), which is 21.67 percent of the total geographical area. This is substantially less than the requirement to maintain ecological balance. There are wide variations across the states and in almost all the geographical areas of the country, forest cover is declining.
